Wrexham Area Civic Society Awards 2008
Added : 03.08.2008
The well-attended 2008 Awards Evening took place on June 12, as usual in the relaxed surroundings of Gresford Memorial Hall. A variety of interesting projects received awards: see 'Awards' section of this site for details and pictures. Thanks are due to the many who helped to make this such a memorable occasion, in particular Chris Edwards for organization and preparing the award certificates, and the ladies who provided the excellent catering.
Rhydymwyn Valley Visit
Added : 03.08.2008
On the warm afternoon of Sunday 13 July, a group of us visited the evocative Rhydymwyn Valley near Mold, a site so secret that it used not to be shown on maps. Here, mustard gas and other munitions were made and research leading to the building of the world's first atomic bomb took place. Many of the original structures survive and we saw how these were being conserved, complete with their historic graffiti from the 1940s. In the attractive visitor centre, we enjoyed a presentation about the site, including a wartime film about the manufacture of mustard gas. The day concluded with a vote of thanks to our enthusiastic guides Colin and Sando.
